Walt Disney Helped to Popularize Portable Sanitation in the 1950s

For the Public,

Innovative, creative, forward-thinking… Walt Disney embodied these traits. In the mid-1950s, he saw a need for these relatively new products (portable restrooms) at his newest attraction, Holidayland, next to Frontierland at Disneyland in Anaheim, California. Thousands of people saw, and used, portable restrooms for the first time. This new 9-acre Disney venue offered plenty of room for picnics, company events, and gatherings.

In the beginning, there were only very small restrooms and no night-time lighting. With a maximum capacity of 7,000 guests, Walt saw the usefulness of these new portable restrooms at Holidayland. Gaining popularity, this new industry was slowly beginning to expand.

Although Holidayland only existed from 1955 to 1961, it was one of the ways that portable restrooms came into wider use.
